Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for responding to my request for a place to live. We
successfully found a place, and will be moving in the end of the month.
So now I'm inquiring whether anyone has a small kitchen table (seat 4) (we
have chairs) or a desk of some sort for my hybrid classes. I probably will
put it on the second floor, so perhaps something in pieces! Any pix would
be great.
But we can't pick it up until at least August 1
Thank you,
Robert

Hello everyone,
My wife Helena and I will be coming up this July (I'll teach and Helena
will research). We're looking for housing, something close to campus.
Nothing fancy, but at least 2BR. Dishwasher, laundry and parking would be
great.
I was wondering whether you had anything, or knew of anyone we should
contact.
Perhaps even if someone is on sabbatical.
We're in town till late Thursday, maybe a bit later, then it's back to PA.
Email, or text at 1-717-805-7041
Thank you for any thoughts!

Colleagues,
Many of you have asked how you can connect into the New York State budget
process for FY 2021 that is in full gear now and in particular, how you can
help our students.
In addition to teams working on advancing several research priorities that
fund our centers and other academic enterprises, your personal support
is particularly
poignant this month for efforts to secure an increase in the state’s
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) which provides financial aid to students
from low- and moderate-incomes. More than 650 Clarkson students access
this aid that gives them the gateway to launch great careers from the
education we provide.
The family income limits have not changed in 20 years and award levels have
been adjusted only once (by $165) during that same period. As a
consequence, over the past five years, funding for TAP has decreased 13
percent and the number of beneficiaries has declined by 9 percent. This
trend will continue until the Legislature acts to expand TAP. See below
for proposals that are on the table now.
Now that budget negotiations are in earnest, there is an opportunity to get
involved. CICU has created an E-advocacy letter
<http://cqrcengage.com/cicu/app/onestep-write-a-letter?0&engagementId=506109>
platform, which can be personalized and used by any member of our campus
community. If you would like to write you own letter, I’ve attached the
list of elected officials for each of our campuses and a URL if you do not
know who represents you. I’ve also attached several more background items
on TAP to familiarize you with the issues as interested.
If you have any questions about how to lend your voice to this issue or
want more background materials, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at
kchezum(a)clarkson.edu or ext. 4483.

*Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)*
*The Commission for Independent Colleges & Universities is asking for a
three-year phase-in to increase the income eligibility to $110,000,
increase the maximum award to $6,000, and increase the minimum award to
$1,000.*
1. TAP is a key source of aid for more than 330,000 New Yorkers at
public, private, and proprietary colleges and universities.
2. The program is 50 years old and needs to be modernized.
3. The maximum income threshold has not been increased from $80,000
since 2000, even though average family incomes in New York increased 7%
from 2005 to 2017. That means fewer families are eligible for TAP each
year.
4. The maximum award amount, $5,165, and minimum award amount, $500,
have also been stagnant for many years.

Note from the Director
It is great when we can celebrate research successes! In December, Governor
Cuomo established a challenge between Clarkson and SUNY ESF to develop a
process prototype for emergency harmful algal bloom (HAB) mitigation. To
respond, Yang Yang (Assistant Professor in Civil and Environ. Engrg.) and
his graduate student ShaSha Yang (unrelated) are working on a very
fast-paced project to develop a process technology that could be deployed
to mitigate HAB outbreaks. The process uses electrochemical oxidation to
kill cyanobacteria and eliminate cytotoxins that are released by the
organisms. As the photos show (see here
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001mGa0Rt-ucv92V-CN6iWkT-laKG3viUEnM76BLmv1Q_Hh…>),
the process works in the lab! The larger-scale prototype has been
manufactured and is on its way to Clarkson with projected delivery January
31, 2020. Profs. Stefan Grimberg and Michael Twiss have supported Yang's
effort. This support - especially to help a new faculty colleague to
succeed - is to be commended!

Clarkson University’s Beacon Institute was one of 23 groups awarded grants
from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The
Institute was awarded $39,459 to develop new and updated exhibits,

DEC Encourages New Yorkers to Complete Survey on St. Lawrence River
Watershed to Help Guide Revitalization Plan for Region
St. Lawrence River Watershed Project
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001mGa0Rt-ucv92V-CN6iWkT-laKG3viUEnM76BLmv1Q_Hh…>
(leaves DEC website) partners, including the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation (DEC), today released a survey seeking input
from New Yorkers with knowledge of the watershed. The short online survey
(here)
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001mGa0Rt-ucv92V-CN6iWkT-laKG3viUEnM76BLmv1Q_Hh…>
seeks information from the public about interactions with these land and
water resources, and how a revitalization plan can address regional
concerns. The survey will be open until January 15, 2020.
Survey results will help guide St. Lawrence River Watershed Project
partners in the development of a revitalization plan. The watershed
planning process gives communities in the area a chance to consider
projects that could spark natural resource protection, economic investment,
regional sustainability, and community revitalization.

Starbucks at Clarkson’s Schuler’s café is the quintessential coffee break
experience: beverages and grab-and-go food including freshly baked goods.
Starbucks We Proudly Serve offers the Starbucks experience with the
following menu choices:
· Starbucks drip coffee spectrum: Blonde, Medium, Dark roast and
seasonal blends
· Starbucks espresso beverages with Fontana syrups and sauces:
lattes, cappuccinos, iced coffees, etc.
· Five of the most popular Frappuccino blended beverages
· Teavana hot and iced teas
Starbucks purchases and roasts only the highest quality whole bean coffees
and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian-style espresso
drinks. Over 40 years of exceptionally brewed coffee and operational
expertise makes Starbucks a national brand to enjoy right here on campus.
Visit Schuler’s on the first floor of the Educational Resources Center
(ERC) next to the Innovation Hub.

Last chance for ordering photo cards! If you didn't see the announcement
last week, here's the info:
We’ve had a lot of interest in ordering photo cards — cards that have a
frame-like window on the cover into which you can insert photos (please see
attached example).
The cards themselves feature the Clarkson wordmark and logo, and adding
photos relevant to your department or program is a nice way to personalize
your correspondence.
Envelopes would have the primary University address (8 Clarkson Ave.).
Personalized enveloped would have to be ordered separately at a different
cost.
The quote we’ve received for these cards is as follows:
Photo Frame Card, 5 X 7″, With 1 Color A7 (Natural) Envelopes Included
Quantity —
500: 1,822.67; Per Each: 3.6453
750: 2,295.26; Per Each: 3.0603
1,000: 2,998.63; Per Each: 2.9986
1,500: 3,959.93; Per Each: 2.6400
2,000: 5,167.07; Per Each: 2.5835
As you can see, the more we order, the cheaper they are, so if you’re
interested, please contact Jennifer Sampson at jsampson(a)clarkson.edu or
315-268-6783.
Physical samples are available in 305 Science Center if you would like to
see what they look like.
Thank you!
